The intricate craft of narrative writing can make a happy story feel exuberant or a sad story feel devastating. With 42 extensive lessons that include poignant discussion questions, standards-aligned self-reflections, engaging writing prompts, and extension opportunities, the fourth unit in a literary analysis module focuses on Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried, Kate Chopin's The Awakening, and Louise Erdrich's "The Red Convertible." Eleventh graders compare and contrast each piece of literature's literary themes and narrative elements before completing a final assessment. This prompts them to write their unique narrative piece based on a point of view from the setting of one of the focus novels.

Instructional Ideas

  • Connect the discussion section on "On the Rainy River" from The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien to a social studies unit on the Vietnam War
  • Use the discussion questions to guide your instruction or as warm-up prompts for your novel unit
  • Assign specific vocabulary words to pairs or groups, and have them look up the word in the dictionary as well as note the word in textual context

Classroom Considerations

  • Builds off of the previous three modules, which cover the selected texts and provide preparation for the final writing assessment
  • At 491 pages, the module is quite long; use your computer's search function to find the lesson you need or concept you'd like to teach in class

Pros

  • Emphasizes the importance of gathering evidence, collaborative discussion about literature, and close reading and annotation of the selected text
  • Provides opportunities for differentiation and scaffolding in every lesson
  • Includes a helpful rubric and self-assessment checklist for short answers, as well as graphic organizers for gathering supporting evidence
  • Encourages learners to keep track of their progress according to the Common Core standards

Cons

  • None
