Good literature can be much like an iceberg requiring readers to presume that the bulk of the meaning may be inferred to be found below the surface. Here's a lesson that asks scholars to conduct a close reading of passages from The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass and of political cartoons to identify inferences that can be made about the author's intentions. Participants then fill out an A-E-I-O-U  chart to evaluate their ability to draw inferences from texts.
