Understanding place value is a basic mathematics skill. This Khan Academy video shows students how to write the number 14,897 in the expanded form. He explains that the 7 in the ones place is the same as 7x1, the 9 in the tens place is the same as 9x10, the 8 in the hundreds place literally represents 8x100 or 800, and so on. He adds up all the numbers 10,000+4,000+800+90+7 which is the expanded form.
