Scholars learn how smells evoke early childhood memories and apply that knowledge to a character from F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. After finding a passage from the novel that references smells, they craft a haiku and a concrete poem for their character.

Instructional Ideas

  • Bring in a collection of Scratch and Sniff books for class members to explore

  • Post the haikus and the memory poems about the classroom and conduct a gallery walk

  • Some learners may need additional scaffolding between identifying a character with a sense of smell and crafting the haiku
