Digestive System (Part 2)

Curated and Reviewed by Lesson Planet

It takes about seven seconds for food to move from the mouth to the stomach. Pupils follow food from the mouth through digestion, exploring where mechanical and chemical digestion occur. Saliva, enzymes, acids, and chyme are a small portion of the vocabulary taught in the 34th video in a series of 47 which ends by exploring cephalic, gastric, and intestinal phases of digestion.

Instructional Ideas

  • After the video, have pairs list all of the organs involved in digestion and their functions, then share and discuss as a class
  • Have pairs make a t-chart, filling in all of the places where mechanical and chemical digestion occur

Classroom Considerations

  • Turn on closed captioning so all learners can follow and understand the concepts
  • This video is hosted on YouTube

Pros

  • A super engaging intro about a man with a hole in his abdomen, which was studied by a scientist
  • Video includes references to vomiting; gross bodily functions are always engaging to high schoolers

Cons

  • None
