"What is the theme of this story?" Now there's a question that can strike fear in the hearts of learners. Here's a lesson plan that uses photographs to introduce the concept of theme. Scholars examine six photographs and then attach a theme card to each one. They then read passages from The Outsiders and apply the same theme cards to each passage. Finally, individuals demonstrate what they have learned by creating their theme picture.

- Laminate the "Theme Room Labels" to permit reuse
Classroom Considerations
- Participants should be familiar with the Four Corners, Why-Lighting, 2 Stars & a Swish, and Gallery Walk strategies; however, links are provided to these strategies if pupils are unfamiliar with them
- Requires a projection device for the "Theme Pictures" slideshow
- Younger learners may not recognize the Ruby/Oswald shooting photograph
