Listen, look, speak, and move are the routine steps of the English language development lessons found in a We Can Work It Out themed unit. Language proficiency is reinforced through picture cards, poems, and grand discussions about gardening, keeping friends, problems, solutions, and the months of the year. Specific concepts include vowel pairs, high frequency words, more, fewer, same, proper nouns, multiple meaning words, descriptions, body language, compound words, cause, effect, long vowels, and naming objects that go together.

Instructional Ideas

  • As a class, keep a running list of multiple meaning words; record and define new ones as the unit, or school year progresses
  • Turn the description lesson into a game; have pupils guess hidden objects based on a peer's descriptions, and reward as you see fit
  • Create and display a temporary class collection; invite learners to bring in two objects that go together

Classroom Considerations

  • Some of the ESL lessons' materials are not included, but remain usable with modifications
  • The unit was designed as part of the Houghton Mifflin English language arts curriculum; however, it can be used independently or along with another curriculum of similar concepts

Pros

  • Multi-level responses and language transfer support suggestions are provided
  • The overall design is easy to follow, well written, and gives plenty of detail

Cons

  • None
