Uss Constitution Museum: How to Be a Great Navigator!

In this lesson, 7th graders are shown how Great Navigators of the past stayed on course with the historical methods of navigation. The concepts of dead reckoning and celestial navigation are discussed. Using Vector Voyage students will use vector analysis to understand the concepts of Dead Reckoning. With The North Wall Star students will perform basic celestial navigation by reading angles from stars to the horizon to determine their latitude. This activity will discuss the North Star and show how it can be used for navigation.
