Urban communities are the focus of a series of lessons created to meet specific needs using differentiated instruction. A pre-assessment designates scholars into three groups based on their ability level. Small groups take part in whole-class discussions and activities alongside leveled learning contracts. Pupils choose three activities from their contract to show what they know about urban communities.

Instructional Ideas

  • Invite family volunteers to aid small groups during learning contract periods
  • Gather a collection of books that highlight urban communities—display and allow learners to browse them for another anchor activity
  • Perform a gallery walk—after contracts are complete, direct pupils to choose one finished product to display at their desk, have class members walk around to view their peers' work

Classroom Considerations

  • Locate the hook's video clip prior to beginning the lesson
  • The two-part pre-assessment groups participants by ability level
  • The lesson was designed as part of a bigger unit—some aspects may need more direction and discussion
  • Some pages contain past due dates

Pros

  • Provides a list of activities—anchor activities—pupils can work on when they complete other tasks early
  • Worksheets are color-coded

Cons

  • Worksheets are not formatted well—words are small and objects are off-center
