Mississippi has both the highest obesity and poverty rate in the US. Does the rest of the data show a correlation between the poverty and obesity rate in a state? Learners tackle this question as they practice their skills of regression. They create a scatter plot and then use technology to calculate a regression equation, analyze the residuals, and inspect the correlation coefficient.

Instructional Ideas

  • Assign pre-work completion outside of class if time is a factor

Classroom Considerations

  • Prior to the lesson, classes should have an understanding of linear regression, residuals, and correlation coefficients
  • Individuals need access to graphing calculators

Pros

  • Incorporates media and thematic mapping to engage learners
  • Data shows a correlation but leaves room to analyze the strength of that correlation

Cons

  • Obesity may be a sensitive subject to some individuals
