Segments That Meet at Right Angles

Curated and Reviewed by Lesson Planet

Can segments be considered perpendicular if they don't intersect? Learners look at nonintersecting segments on the coordinate plane and make conclusions about the lines that contain those segments. They determine if they are perpendicular by considering translations to the origin. Finally, they create an equation using the endpoints of the segments.

Instructional Ideas
  • Have individuals record important vocabulary and theorems in a graphic organizer such as a waffle
Classroom Considerations
  • Provide graph paper to pupils to use with exploration of the exercises presented in the lesson
  • Lesson builds directly from the fifth part of the series
  • The sixth lesson in a 15-part series
Pros
  • Designed as an inquiry lesson that encourages learners to explore mathematical methods
  • Includes all handouts and answer keys as well as a detailed teacher guide
Cons
  • Does not make a connection to the slope of the segments
