Sampling Methods and Preventing Bias

Curated and Reviewed by Lesson Planet

Experimental design can be both incredibly intuitive and very high-concept when first introduced to learners. This video does a great job of discussing sampling methods and bias simply, without over-reducing the complexity. Multiple examples are presented of both correct and incorrect experiment designs with methods for identifying and correcting problems. A great introduction or refresher in the importance of random sampling and bias prevention for young statisticians.

Instructional Ideas

  • Divide the class into small groups and have each create and perform a skit demonstrating bias and how to fix it
  • Bring in newspapers for the class to look for reported statistical results and discuss potential sampling methods and bias
  • Invite a local statistician or PhD into class to discuss experimental design in their research or field

Classroom Considerations

  • Video viewing requires the Internet
  • Providing a script of the video might assist learners who need more processing time for the concepts discussed
  • Consider pausing the presentation at regular intervals to allow for class questions and discussion

Pros

  • Engagingly narrated, not just read off of the slides
  • Relevant and simple examples
  • Scenarios cover many kinds of errors and corrective actions

Cons

  • No printable slides available
  • No post-video problems
  • The only bias method discussed involves surveys and question wording
