What would a main idea be without important details? Readers use a graphic organizer to record key details from an informational text (a fiction text would also work). Review main idea as a concept before beginning, asking scholars to come up with answers before you explain it to them. After you introduce the book, they predict what it will be about. Then, learners complete the graphic organizer by writing down three key details as they listen to you read. Model the first detail by completing it with them, and pause so they have time to record their thoughts. Partners share their thoughts on the book's main idea before discussing it as a class.
