This Poly-Gone activity & project also includes:

Investigate polygons from rectangles to triangles to octagons. Each level of the five-problem series targets a different grade level. Beginning with the level A problem, learners examine the relationship between area and perimeter by building a rectangle from a set number of cubes. Problems B through E maintain the same problem situation but increase the rigor by incorporating different shapes and more advanced concepts such as maximum area and constructions.

Instructional Ideas
  • Provide manipulatives for your classes to use as they explore the different shapes
  • Assign problems above- and below- grade level to differentiate when necessary
Classroom Considerations
  • Expects a functional understanding of area and perimeter of different shapes depending on the level of the problem
  • Includes a teacher guide with lesson descriptions and explanations
  • Provides a handout for pupil reference
