Concepts

test preparation, Standardized Tests, Study Skills, explanatory writing, Narrative Writing, comparative essays, compare and contrast essays, reading strategies, reading comprehension, reading nonfiction, responding to literature, responding to reading, textual analysis, textual evidence, word meanings, compare and contrast texts

Instructional Ideas

  • Set aside the time for a couple of days in the computer lab for learners to try out and ask questions about the online version
  • Pair this with a few short lessons on test-taking strategies
  • Discuss the questions and responses as a class

Classroom Considerations

  • Depending on your printing capabilities, it may prove difficult to print the large-print version of the assessment
  • Some questions in the online version are more interactive than the typical multiple choice question (they might have passages students can drag and drop, etc.)
  • After completing the online version, pupils can see their scores for the easily graded questions and share them with a teacher; these show up as scores, but do not show the answers

Pros

  • Both the online and paper versions come with answer keys that show the relationship between each question and specific Common Core standards
  • A rubric is included for the essay questions

Cons

  • None
