Pbs Learning Media: Sanditon: Slavery and Its Legacy in England

Curated by ACT

Charlotte Heywood is shocked to learn that slavery still flourishes around the world, in this video excerpt from Sanditon: Masterpiece, based on Jane Austen's unfinished novel. Charlotte discovers that Otis Molyneux-an educated, free black man in love with Charlotte's friend, Georgiana-was born in Africa, taken from his mother, and sold. Much to Charlotte's dismay, she also learns that the legacy of slavery taints many of the luxuries she enjoys, from sugar to cotton. After viewing, explore the anti-slavery movement in Britain that finally resulted in the Abolition of Slavery Act in 1833. [1:27] Teaching materials and an Austen biography are included.
