App Overview

Pass the Past tests users’ ability to read graphs, maps, and graphic organizers, to identify the main idea of a passage, and to recall historical information. Questions, drawn from released Standards of Learning exams, are randomly presented so that each time an exam is selected, different questions appear. Setting options are provided so that test takers may choose to turn the sound off or on, to have answers shown, to determine the number of hints provided, and to choose one of three difficulty levels. For those stuck, clues are presented.

Instructional Ideas

Because multiple versions of the tests are provided, students scoring below a set percentage on a particular topic could be asked to review their notes and then take another exam on the same topic. The high-score record permits users to compare their results to others.

Classroom Considerations

Although designed specifically for Virginia's Standard's of Learning exam, the majority of questions included in this educational gaming app are focused on world and US history, civics, and geography from 1500 to the present, and can be used in any classroom.

Pros

  • Multiple versions of quizzes for each topic
  • Questions test reading skills as well content knowledge
  • Easy to navigate
  • High score posts permit results comparison

Cons

  • Two of the nine sections focus on Virginia studies
