Unit Plan

Noticing Poetry

Curated and Reviewed by Lesson Planet

Introduce scholars to the "I Notice" method, a different approach to studying poetry. Instructors first model the noticing method by identifying words and images that appeal on the sonic level, the ideational level, the sensory level, and the visual level. Jigsaw groups practice this same approach, using cards that list the steps for each level. Scholars then record their observations on an "I Notice" Poem Level Meter and note relationships between the different levels. Finally, individuals practice the method and then demonstrate they can recognize the four levels independently.
