Instructional Ideas

  • Using crayons or colored pencils and an atlas, have students color in the continents to reflect their different geographical features
  • Have pupils create additional land masses like Japan, Madagascar, and Greenland and add them to their globes
  • Provide learners with a list of major cities to locate and label on their globes
  • Ask the class to label the different oceans and bodies of water using a permament marker

Classroom Considerations

  • Experiment with different glues in order to find the best option for attaching paper to balloons
  • The continent templates may be difficult for young children to cut out, in which case, you can just ask that they do their best to cut around the shapes

Pros

  • A clear set of step-by-step instructions are provided for completing the activity
  • Hands-on activity engages pupils in learning world geography
  • Offers ideas for including the activity in a unit on diversity and cultural awareness

Cons

  • None
