People Change the Landscape

Students examine ways in which humans have brought change to the natural environment. For this ecology and literacy lesson, students listen to the book Island Boy by Barbara Cooney. Students observe and define map-reading vocabulary as the book is read. Students then work in groups to draw a map depicting island life prior to any inhabitants and an altered map that depicts the changes that human beings added to island life.
