High schoolers are introduced to potential and kinetic energy through the example of a ball being thrown straight up in the air. They are then told that the energy associated with the position of the object is referred to as potential energy. The energy associated with the object's motion is referred to as kinetic energy. The conservation of energy requires that the sum of the potential energy and the kinetic energy must remain constant as an object ascends and descends.
