Latino Literature: Poetry

Under construction, this lesson focuses on Canto Familia, a collection of poetry about Gary Soto's experiences growing up in California's Imperial Valley. Representative of the experiences of many Latinos, the poems also address themes found in traditional and contemporary works. Pupils identify literary devices as well as the unique and universal in Soto's poetry. The unit concludes with a class letter addressed to Soto which focuses on personal connections to the poet's works.
