Instructional Ideas

  • During the study of The Mitten bring in different colored felt sheets from the craft store and have the children cut one sheet in half; trace a large mitten onto the two pieces of felt and have the children cut out the mittens; then with a hole puncher, pop holes on the edge of both mittens, give the children a long piece of yarn to sew both halves of the mitten together, leaving the bottom of mitten open; finally, have the children draw all the animals from the story, cut them out, and put them inside the mitten

Classroom Considerations

  • Significant prep time is required for each book lesson; consider asking for help from a classroom aide or parent volunteer
  • If computers are not available in the classroom, be sure to schedule time in the school's computer lab or library
  • Book study requires several of Jan Brett's books; make sure to check them out of the library if not already in your own classroom library

Pros

  • Includes extensions for children that need higher level thinking and adaptations for those who need more support
  • Activities are engaging
  • Resource can be used different times of the school year based on the author's books
