How Can You Tell if a Function is Linear or Nonlinear From a Table?

Is it possible to tell if a table of values represents a linear function or a nonlinear function? One way is to graph the ordered pairs to see if it makes a straight line. But, take a look at the rate of change in the table. If the rate of change is constant, then it's a linear function!
