A two-day assessment challenges scholars to read an excerpt from the story, Bud Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis then complete a series of exercises in preparation for a writing assignment. Day one includes an independent reading followed by a peer discussion and the completion of two graphic organizers that focus on textual evidence to answer specific questions. Day two prompts pupils to take pen to paper as they write an opinion piece using their notes and graphic organizers.
