Secondary learners explore the westward movement of African Americans. Segmented into four time periods, the lesson provides an overview of how African Americans experienced westward expansion. Learners view PBS specials on the westward movement, discuss them, and then work in collaborative groups to research a subtopic of the movement. After completing the research, each group creates documents from the time period, and then graph and analyze population figures of their chosen time period.
