Writing the Persuasive Essay

Curated and Reviewed by Lesson Planet

An excellent, in-depth resource would be an asset to your unit on writing an argument essay. It provides an explanation to each part of the essay as well as examples of transition words to strengthen your kids' writing. Additionally, the last page provides kids with a peer editing page in which they can assess their classmates' rough drafts.

Instructional Ideas

  • Base your instruction on persuasive writing on the terms and structure outlined in the resource
  • Have kids annotate the important parts of the worksheets and keep notes in their writing journals
  • Use the packet as a reference guide in your class's language arts binders
  • Craft a writing rubric based on the peer assessment page at the end of the resource

Classroom Considerations

  • Best for kids who need assistance with their writing structure; stronger writers could experiment with a looser essay structure as long as they stick to the essay requirements

Pros

  • Prompts kids to examine their writing for solid thesis statements, opposing points, and at least three ways that they backed up their arguments

Cons

  • None
