Understanding place value is a basic mathematics skill. This Khan Academy video shows students how to write the number 14,897 in the expanded form. He explains that the 7 in the ones place is equivalent to 7x1, the 9 in the tens place is equivalent to 9x10, the 8 in the hundreds place represents 8x100 or 800, and so on. He adds up all the numbers: 10,000 + 4,000 + 800 + 90 + 7, which is the expanded form.
