How can we heal our hearts through forgiveness?  The third activity in a series of six prompts readers to answer questions about Words by Heart by Ouida Sebestyen. Not only does it activate background knowledge on the text, but it also provides focus questions for future reading assignments. Have learners come back and answer some of their questions about forgiveness after reading in order to reinforce learning.

Instructional Ideas

  • Have a leader from the class record answers onto a projected K-W-H-L chart for all to see
  • Assign a small research assignment that has learners choose one of the research options from the organizer and investigate a topic of their choosing
  • Consider conducting the activity as a jigsaw: the class works together in small groups and then comes together at the end of the activity to share their work with the class as a whole

Classroom Considerations

  • Resource discusses the procedure of a KWL strategy in depth, which may be helpful for beginning teachers but redundant for an experienced teacher

Pros

  • The resource models the strategy before having individuals attempt it
  • Activity includes a rationale for educators

Cons

  • None
