Scholars get to know famous Dutch painter, Vincent van Gogh, as an artist as well as a person. After reading personal letters and analyzing paintings, participants paint two self-portraits that represent their personality. Then, write a letter that describes the painting and how the work describes their character.

Instructional Ideas

  • Display finished products around the classroom for Open House or Back to School Night 
  • If applicable, coordinate the lesson with the school's art teacher—discuss the opportunity to team-teach and align the subject with the art's curriculum
