Momoyama and Edo are periods in Japanese history that can be defined culturally and artistically. Learners explore and discuss how the samurai used sword guards and grip enhancers. Pupils read the story "The Inch-High Samurai," examine the piece, Sword Guard of Bamboo and Tiger, and then research samurai life. This is a very interesting lesson that incorporates art, culture, and geographical concepts.
- Provides clear images of the sword guard and background information
- The lesson is well-developed and could be incorporated into many other lessons about culture and art
- Google Earth is used during the research process; if you don't have it in your classroom, it may need to be installed prior to the lesson
