Instructional Ideas

  • Have class members participate in a reader's theater
  • Prompt readers to write about their own experiences asking parents for permission to do something, leading to a longer narrative essay
  • For a persuasive essay, turn the question about doing the right thing into a longer writing assignment in which writers argue about which character was right in their actions

Classroom Considerations

  • Script is three pages long, which would make it difficult to include in an assessment or individual activity
  • Some of the worksheets are in color
  • One question asks learners which character did the right thing; try to frame this question as a chance to offer an opinion or persuasive answer

Pros

  • Comes with a worksheet that includes a section for comparing details, as well as two comprehension questions

Cons

  • The script formatting is strange and could confuse readers
  • Some wording is difficult to understand; you may need to focus on context clues for a few of the lines
