Imagine calling a truce in the middle of a war, singing Christmas carols with the enemy, exchanging gifts, and playing a game of football. Such a thing actually happened. Class members listen the stories of soldiers who experienced the Christmas Truce of 1914, examine images, complete a worksheet, and craft their own diary entry in the voice of a soldier.

Instructional Ideas

  • Use with a reading of All Quiet on the Western Front and/or a viewing of Keith Gordon's 1992 film A Midnight Clear

Pros

  • A script of the podcast is provided for those who find the accents of some of the speakers difficult to understand
  • An excellent resource to use with a study of All Quiet on the Western Front

Cons

  • The language exercises seem misplaced in a resource focused on the tragedy of war
