First and second graders see that everyday objects are made from a variety of materials. They interact with objects such as keys, plastic spoons, a wooden ruler, a towel, and a plastic bag. A discussion ensues which leads them to understand some of the properties of these materials, and where they come from. To finish the instructional activity, there is a good group activity in which pupils are asked to sort a variety of objects into similar groups based on what material they are made from.
