Solving systems by substitution can be a challenging topic in algebra I. Here is a lesson that builds on young scholars' understanding of intercepts to begin the process of substitution, and all work is reinforced graphically to build confidence. To conclude the lesson, an activity is provided to extend learning to a parabola-line system.

Classroom Considerations

  • Graph paper is required to be able to graph systems to verify solutions

Pros

  • Solving systems is presented as an extension of finding linear intercepts; building from this prior knowledge helps individuals see substitution as a known skill
  • Clear, step-by-step solutions are offered for each example problem covered in the lesson

Cons

  • An answer key is not provided for the warm-up exercises
