Learners take on the role of astronomers, calculating conditions necessary for a total solar eclipse. Concepts of similar triangles and properties of circles come together as pupils create ratios and use real measurements in determining why total eclipses are so rare. This information is also used to calculate an estimate for the magnitude of the sun, really driving home the immensity of the universe.

Instructional Ideas

  • Could be linked to a science unit on planetary motion
  • Different groups could calculate answers based on different orbital distances

Classroom Considerations

  • Activity references color-coded planetary bodies, might need adapting for grayscale copies
  • Blank last page, if copying costs are a concern
  • Assumes students are familiar with similar triangles and basic circle properties (tangent lines, radii, etc.)

Pros

  • Application brings dry calculations and theorems to real-life applications
  • Clear and thorough teacher notes also provide possible extensions and adaptations

Cons

  • Referenced video of eclipse is missing
