Teach young engineers that all machines, no matter how complicated or complex, are made up of just six simple devices with this hands-on physical science lesson. Using the included templates, students first create paper models of inclined planes, wedges, wheels, screws, and levers before exploring the different ways these machines are used in everyday life to make work easier.

Instructional Ideas

  • Implement these simple machine activities as a series of science learning centers, having small groups of students rotate through and complete each of them over the course of one or two class periods
  • Laminate copies of the matching activity materials, using them each year while teaching about simple machines

Classroom Considerations

  • You may wish to print the simple machines templates on card stock to improve both their durability and functionality
  • The timing of this lesson is flexible and can be adapted as needed to fit your class schedule

Pros

  • Lesson offers variations and suggestions for additional activities that extend learning
  • All worksheets, answer keys, and other printable materials required for the lesson are included
  • A homework assignment is provided that engages children and their parents in identifying simple machines that are used around the house

Cons

  • None
