Good question are the heart of great discussions. To prepare for a book club discussion, introduce young readers to the characteristics of good conversation-starting questions. Practice crafting questions for a text the class has studied, and for independent practice, ask individuals to create questions for the book they are currently reading. These questions are then shared and discussed in small groups. Although Elizabeth George Speare’s The Sign of the Beaver is used here, the approach can be used with any fiction or nonfiction text.
