Describes a lesson where young scholars are introduced to a live fish caught locally. After discussion of its characteristics, and having students draw and label it, they listen to a storybook about fishing, and are introduced to a set of fish family cards, in this case of Minnesota fish. (The fish family cards referred to in the lesson are available at: http://files.dnr.state.mn.us/education_safety/education/minnaqua/leadersguide/chapter_2/2_3_fish_families.pdf) Young scholars work with the cards to sort and classify the fish families. A final activity suggests they create a pop can fishing device.
