This article describes a new approach to teaching children more than just memorizing a formula to find area and hope they don't confuse it with perimeter. This approach involves a project with real life situations. CCSS.Math.Content.3.MD.C.5.b A plane figure which can be covered without gaps or overlaps by n unit squares is said to have an area of n square units.
