Rock & Roll Hall of Fame: Sti Lesson 27: The Faust Theme

The Faust theme, that of risking eternal damnation by selling one's soul to the devil in exchange for magical powers, can be found in virtually every genre of music as well as in literature and the visual arts. Examples utilizing this theme can be found as early as biblical times as a means of understanding humanity's place in the universe and the struggle between good and evil. This interdisciplinary lesson plan focuses on the life and music of bluesman Robert Johnson as a twentieth-century interpretation of this famous myth and demonstrates thematic connections between various art forms.
