Some words are tricky. Can your scholars quickly recognize irregularly spelled words? Write the word was on the board (or any irregular word you'd like to practice), touching each letter as scholars segment the phonemes. Explain that the letters make different sounds in this word than those scholars are used to sounding out, then challenge them to a fast-thinking word recognition game. Write several familiar regularly spelled words on the board along with your focus word a couple of times. Point to words one at a time; the class pronounces only the irregular word, staying silent for all others.
