Lesson Plan

Racing M&M Colors

Curated and Reviewed by Lesson Planet

More than anything, this is great practice in scientific inquiry. After discovering that the color coating of an M&M® dissolves in water during a preceding activity, investigators now question whether or not the color makes a difference in the dissolving rate. If you have the time, you can use it as an extension of a lesson on dissolving or as part of the unit produced by the American Chemical Society.

Pros
  • Comes with attractive lab sheets and worksheets
  • Thoroughly written teacher's notes
  • Part of a mini unit that uses M&Ms® to explore physical science concepts, which is then part of a larger unit on matter
Cons
  • The lesson plan does not reinforce the steps of the scientific method; for older learners, consider having them write their own lab reports using all of the components
