Choose any passage that uses punctuation effectively and analyze it with your class. Learners read the passage out loud once, ignoring the punctuation. Then they read it again, but this time paying attention to all of the punctuation. Finally, they fill out a graphic organizer which asks them to analyze four punctuation marks, taking into consideration how they make meaning in the passage.

Pros

  • Reading the passage out loud will help students hear how punctuation helps to structure text and make meaning
  • See the materials tab for a version of this worksheet in Spanish

Cons

  • It may be difficult for pupils to read a passage and just not pay attention to punctuation marks; consider making two copies of a passage: one with punctuation marks, and one without
  • While the resource lists a reading standard, the exercise actually fits more appropriately with the language standard that covers punctuation
