They conclude the activity by viewing the culture under a microscope. Once they collect and analyze the required data, participants review results in a teacher-led discussion.

Instructional Ideas

  • Allow class members to research the overuse of antibiotics and why this contributes to antibiotic-resistant bacteria
  • Let groups demonstrate their results in the form of slide presentations

Classroom Considerations

  • Take adequate safety measures while working with live bacterial cultures
  • Individuals should have knowledge of microscope use before conducting this activity

Pros

  • Many strains of bacteria may be substituted with this activity, so long as safety measures are followed
  • Further research may be conducted, with a focus on nanotechnology application, for upper grade levels

Cons

  • None
