Each digit holds a specific value in numbers, and understanding place value is the key to this concept. Youngsters examine eight numbers and determine the value of four in each, writing it in both number and word form. Next, they circle the numbers with a five valuing 50, doing the same for numbers with a four valuing 400. Finally, there are six problems where scholars substitute a digit in an existing number to determine how much the old number increases or decreases. Be sure to complete examples with kids before they do this, as there are a few chances for confusion.
