Penn Museum: Iraq's Ancient Past Ur's Royal Cemetery

Curated by ACT

A fascinating exhibition on early Mesopotamia which looks at the city of Ur located in Sumer, which is now part of Iraq. It discusses the history of Ur and its excavation. Most of the exhibition talks about the Royal Cemetery of Ur, which has been a rich source of information about Mesopotamia, particularly about its wealthy citizens. We meet the archaeologists, and Queen Puabi who was buried at the site. We also learn about the expedition, life at the archaeological site, newspaper reports of the discovery, the stratigraphy of the site, the end of the 12-year excavation, and much more. There are many images of the artifacts, and there is also discussion of the serious looting that has taken place.
