With minimal setup and maximum freedom, young geometers are encouraged to think outside the box on a seemingly simple application problem. Though the task seems simple, measuring a given paper clip and finding how many 10 meters can produce, multiple methods of attack meet learners in their areas of strength. Those strong in measurement abilities can organize a solution that way, while those more comfortable in formulas can approach from that angle. An emphasis on sources of error is woven effectively into teacher notes on either method.

Instructional Ideas

  • Try this as an intro into composite shapes calculations and formulas
  • Students advanced enough to do geometric calculations could do a comparison with the measurement method to study sources of error

Classroom Considerations

  • Visual disability considerations with small grid
  • Provide charts empty or partially filled out for differentiation needs

Pros

  • Multiple methods for different learning styles
  • Emphasis on sources of error in application
  • Encourages learners to problem solve creatively

Cons

  • Right-hand margin cuts off several letters in some spots
  • No summary comparison of two major methods
