Lesson Plan

On Marilyn Nelson's Poem “1905”

Curated and Reviewed by Lesson Planet

Marilyn Nelson's poem, "1905," asks young scholars to compare and contrast George Washington Carver and Albert Einstein. After studying images of the two scientists and listing their observations, class members listen to several readings of Marilyn Newton's poem, "1905," and again record their observations and questions. After sharing observations with the whole class, individuals examine history text books and consider how they would change the entry about Carver.
