The class discusses the different purposes an author has for writing. The focus of the discussion is on writing to tell a true story and writing to give information about a specific topic. There are writing purpose sorting cards embedded in the plan that pupils use to try their hand at these two types of writing. One of the cards reads, "Tell the difference between frogs and toads." Another reads, "Tell about a time you got your favorite birthday gift." A terrific instructional activity that should get your elementary schoolers excited about writing.
